As part of my quest to bring modern era building kits to the n scale marketplace, I felt compelled to include the ever abundant inline, single-story retail center, otherwise known as the strip mall. They come in all shapes and sizes, from 5,000 sq ft to over 40,000 sq ft. They are found everywhere from urban city centers and sprawling suburbs where they often host big box retailers to small towns where they house local businesses. And they are always found along heavily trafficked roadways with plenty of parking spaces for their customers.
The design for this kit was derived from the same designs that created for the Lyforms Small-Scale modern era convenience store kits SK006 and SK011. This strip mall kit maintains the same dimensions as the convenience store kits. The brick and siding textures lent themselves well to the look of a typical small footprint strip mall that you can find squeezed in anywhere a developer can find the space.
I added 3 more service doors on the rear wall and reconfigured the front to accommodate 3 more doors to depict 4 store-fronts. I also redesigned the marquee found on the SK006 kit to include an awning running the length of the front over the store-front entrances. The top of the marquee extends upwards to provide a broad and flat surface for store signage.
I wanted to keep the footprint of this kit smaller so that it wouldn't take up much room on an n scale layout. It will provide the look and feel of a retail area while allowing room for other items on your layout. As you will see from some of the pictures, you can put several of them together to create a larger strip mall if desired. You can really make it sprawl!!
If you haven't seen it yet, please go check out the photos of the SK023 kit. Hopefully it can find a way to your layout!
